Can i claim my tax bk as im a student and got taxed over summer?

  • Im 18, currently just started uni. I worked all over summer, around 40/45 hours a week through july and august, and as i finished college i got taxed! i really want to know if i can claim this tax back. Iv earned about £3000 in the year, and currently not working, so can i claim it back? and how do i do it? i have my tax number on my payslip for the company, but who do i phone?

  • Your tax is worked out on what you earn over a full year April to March and as a single person you can earn £6030 before you start paying tax . My guess is that you should get any overpayment back after end of this tax year , around April 5th 2009
But you should contact the relevant tax office for more advice as they might take into account things like benefits etc

  • You can downlaod form P50 from www.hmrc.gov.uk and send it to your tax office with your P45.

  • Yes, you can claim the tax back as this is below the taxable threshold. PAYE is worked out on the basis that you earn at the same rate throughout the year so if you worked two months and earned £3000 you will have paid the same tax over those two months as someone on an £18000 salary.

Contact the Inland Revenue to claim your tax back, although it will automatically be paid back to you once the tax year is over as the revenue will then be able to see that you've paid too much tax for the year.
