Why has the amount of tax deducted from my wages changed from last month ?

  • This month the tax taken is about £60 more than last month but my tax code hasn't changed. Has something gone wrong here or does the amount change month to month. The top line income is not different.

    I will speak to the IR - just want to know if this is norm first !

  • is it cos the 10p tax band has been removed, you should have had £60 tax back last month, are you sure your reading your payslip correctly!!???

    Go to HR anyway as they could have made a mistake


  • Last month you got a cumulative rebate backdated to 6th April. For the rest of the tax year, you'll get more than you did in August, but a lot less than you did in September.

  • Your tax code should have changed in September. The govt concession following the outcry at the removal of the 10% tax band was to increase everyone's personal allowance by £600. Assuming you are a basic rate taxpayer this would mean you got a £60 rebate in September and will get £10 extra each month for the remaining 6 months of the tax year. I'd check your code again - the standard code of 543L was changed to 603L in September. Perhaps the code has not changed on your payslip in an administrative error - check again in October.

    You really should have paid £60 less tax than £60 more - I would ask your payroll department. The tax amount paid can only really change based on your tax code.

    Is there any chance the deduction is not tax but perhaps you have begun student loan repayments or something similar? That's the only explanation I can think of.
